What's in a door
Acting like a smile on the face of your home, your front door welcomes guests, shields against the elements and attests to your achievement, taste and style. Our Door Project Planning Center will help you find the door that is right for your home!

Exterior Doors

Exterior Doors: Doors used on the outside of the house to separate exterior weather and temperature from inside living areas. Usually 1 3/4" thick, insulated and in weather-strip frames. These doors are always solid and can be wood, steel, fiberglass or composite.
Doors come in a number of standard sizes:
  • Width - 30, 32, 36 inches
  • Height - 78, 80, 84 inches (typical)
  • Thickness - 1 3/4, (typical)
Stiles: Upright or vertical members forming the outside pieces.
Rails: Horizontal members framing the wood panels and glass inserts
Mullion: Vertical framing between the stiles
Raised Panels: Panels set into door stiles, mullions and rails whose center sections are raised.
Lock Rail: The rail directly positioned at the horizontal location of the lock
Bores: Any hole drilled into the stile to incorporate any locks or mechanisms. Most doors with dead bolts require double holes bored. These holes can change depending upon lock type and manufacturer.
Jambs: The wood frame piece that the door is hinged to and housed in.
*Jamb size: The distance between the inside wall and the exterior wall, not including trim & casing. (See figure 4 + figure 5)
Exterior Trim: The material or moulding attached to the exterior of the door jamb or frame. The trim acts as a transition between door jamb and exterior siding. This trim can be decorative moulding or just flat stock. This option can be important for the exterior design of the door or if a storm door is being used on the door.
Door Handing: The door handing is to determine which way the door is to swing open, if it swings into the home or to the exterior. Regardless if it swings in or out the doors handing is determined with the door swinging towards you. If the knob is on the right, pulling towards you, then the handing is right hand. If the knob is on the left, then it is left handed. (See figure 6)
Door Sill: The sill is the bottom portion of the door frame to which the door panel seals into. The sill is typically tapered to the exterior to shed water away from the door & home. A sweep or gasket attached to the bottom of the door panel insures a weathertight seal. Sills can be made out of wood or metal.
The two typical ones are Oak and Aluminum.
  • Oak sills must be exterior sealed to ensure a long life or product.
  • Aluminum sill requires little maintenance and come in a variety of styles & Finishes. (See figure 2)

Interior Doors

Door Frame/Jamb: The wood frame that the door is hinged and housed in. When a door is ordered framed, it's called a set-up door unit
Jamb Type: Interior doors are "set-up" in three typical types; split, solid rabbeted & flat board.
  • A split jamb is a jamb that can vary it's depth size by a sliding toung & groove system. Door casing can be applied to the frame prior to installation in most cases.
  • A solid Rabbeted is a "solid" piece of wood that has been ordered to the appropriate jamb size or depth. (See figure 1)
  • The solid jamb is available in either single or double rabbeted. (A split jamb is typically a double rabbeted jamb)
Jamb Size/Jamb Depth: The distance between the two wall surfaces that the door frame is to be installed into
(See figure 4)
Door Casing: The material or moulding attached to the door frame. The casing acts as a decorative transition between frame and interior wall surface. The casing is typically mitered at the corners, but may be field applied. (See figure 1 + figure 3 )
Hinges/Styles: Interior hinges come in a variety of styles & finishes. Brass (Dull, bright, solid), Nickel (Bright, Brushed), Antiqued, Black, Ball Tipped & Fineals.
