MEASURE FOR A DOOR
How to Measure for a New or Replacement Door: Glossary of Terms
Measuring for an Interior Door
Measuring for an Exterior Door
Measuring for replacing door only
Follow these steps if you are replacing only the swinging portion of your door.
- Open the door and measure the width and height of the door slab.
(This is the net door size.)
- Measure the location of all hinges from the top down to each hinge.
(ie: top to first hinge, top to second...)
- Note size of each hinge and if it has square corners or radius corners.
- Measure for bore locations from the top of the door to the center of the lock bore.
(It is very important to measure to the center of the hole.)
- Measure the size of the bore hole. (ie: 2-1/8", 1-1/2", etc.)
- Measure the distance from the edge of door to center of lock bore.
(This is called the backset of the lock.)
- The last step is to determine the handing of the door. This is always done with the door swinging towards you. The side that the knob is on is the "swing" of the door. If the knob is on the right, it's a "right hand" door. If it's on the left, it's a "left hand" door.
