Measuring For Your New Kitchen

Measuring For Your New Kitchen
Measure your kitchen according to the following information. Be as specific as possible and include any odd angles or corners your kitchen might have.

Ready to map out your dream kitchen? Print out grid paper!

  1. Measure the length and width of your kitchen. Transfer your measurements onto the grid, using the scale 1 cube = 1 square foot.
  2. Measure all existing appliances or specs for new appliances.
  3. Mark the location of doors, windows and major appliances. Measure door & window outside of casing to outside of casing.
  4. Note the height of ceilings and windows.
  5. Note any structural change to rooms i.e. move door or window, enlarge door or window or window opening, delete or move wall.
  6. Note any special cabinets that interest you such as wine racks, hutches, recycle bin cabinets or pantry / storage cabinets.
  7. Note any special cabinet features that interest you such as glass mullion doors, roll out trays or Lazy Susans™.
  8. Note the number of persons who will be using the kitchen on a regular basis.
  9. Note any hobbies frequently done in the kitchen.
  10. Keep in mind a kitchen's three main work stations (the food preparation/cooking work station, the food storage work station and the clean-up work station) and the priority you place on each. Will one of these stations be an island?
  11. Consider a fourth work station such as a planning work station with a desk for meal planning, the use of the phone or computer and completion of paperwork.
