MEASURE FOR A WINDOW
How To Measure For A Replacement Window
A replacement window is an option for people who want to update their old windows to make them energy efficient, stop drafts, and stop window swelling. It involves removing only the upper and lower sash of the window with no removal of the interior trim. They are mostly available in vinyl and are easy to install. Est. time for replacement: 45 minutes
1. Measure the width of the opening from jamb to jamb, behind the trim or "stops."
2. Measure 3 places: at top, bottom and middle, and use the smallest dimension.
3. Measure the height from the bottom of the sill to the head jamb above the trim.
4. Measure 3 places: each side and the middle, and use the smallest dimension.
*NOTE: These instructions are for a double-hung window. If your window is a slider, or a casement, measure the widest part of the opening width and opening height. Record the dimensions and note that the old window is a casement, slider, or awning window. Check with your window expert at Moynihan Lumber and he'll advise you on how to proceed.
How To Measure For A New Window Unit
A new window unit is just what is sounds like - an entirely new window structure that includes the window, frames, exterior casing, and screens. This is an option for new construction, for complete remodeling, or for excessively rotted sills and damage. It requires the removal of the old window and frame to allow new unit to be replaced. Reframing is sometimes necessary. Estimate time for replacement: 2 hours
1. Remove casing and measure the width of the opening from stud to stud.
2. Measure 3 places: top, bottom and middle, and use the smallest dimension.
3. Measure the height from top to bottom.
4. Measure 3 places: each side and the middle, and use the smallest dimension.
